He's short and solid with blue eyes and a mop of grey hair.
Anh ấy thấp và rắn chắc. Tóc anh ấy điểm hoa râm.
• tính tình:

Thí dụ:
She/He's tall, slim, outgoing, quiet, a romantic
She/He has blue eyes, grey hair, a positive attitude

Grant's a lively person , who never seems to stop talking.
Grant's a lively person, who never seems to stop talking.
She's a likeable woman↗, who cares about other people↘.
She's a fun-loving person↗, who enjoy parties↘.
He's a man↗ who likes women↘.
Part 5 - PRACTICE (luyện tập)

Episode 14:
I knocked gently on Diana's bedroom door, and told her that the police were coming to see her. A few minutes later she joined Judy and me in the sitting room. She was still half asleep.
'What is it?' she asked. 'Is it Henry Cotton… Is it my father?'
'I don't know,' I said. 'I expect so.' While we were waiting for the police, Mandy arrived home looking happy and excited. She could see straight away that something had happened, and we told her that the police were coming.
'Did you have a good time?' I asked her. I could see that she had.
'Mmm… lovely,' Mandy replied. 'Ben took me out to dinner'.
Ah-ha! I thought so! Ben Morris! 'I suppose you know Ben Morris,' I said to Diana. She looked confused for a moment.
'Who? Ben? Oh yes, of course.'
The doorbell rang, and it was Detective Baker. He was a huge man, tall and strong but his manner was gentle and kind. I introduced Diana and Judy, and Mandy and I started to leave the room.
'I'd like you to stay, please,' the detective said to us. 'I'm afraid we have some very bad news. Henry Cotton is dead. He was found in his car on a country road outside Melbourne, and we believe he killed himself.'
'How?' I asked.
'He shot himself. There was a gun beside the… er… body.'
'When did it happen?'
'We don't know that yet, but we believe it was about two weeks ago.'
I didn't say anything, but I thought that Cotton must have been already dead when the man came to the hotel with the letter. Diana was pale but very calm. She didn't speak. But I said, 'I don't believe it!'
'I'm afraid it's true.' said the detective. So… Henry Cotton was dead. I believed that. But I did not believe that he had killed himself.

2. opinion 2. ý kiến
3. size 3. kích thước
4. shape 4. hình dạng
5. colour 5. màu sắc
6. nationality 6. nguồn gốc
7. material 7. vật liệu
8. noun used as an adjective 8. danh từ dùng như tính từ
I have two beautiful, old, wooden chairs. Tôi có hai cái ghế gỗ cũ, rất đẹp.
(number, opinion, age, material)
They have two incredible, up-to-date, Họ có hai máy vi tính rất lạ thường kiểu
Japanese computers. mới nhất của Nhật.
(number, opinion, age, nationality)
I like pretty, pink, silk shirts. Tôi thích áo lụa đẹp màu hồng.
(opinion, colour, meterial)
She has a new, blue and white hat.
My car is big, red and fast.
Are you going to buy a pink blouse↗ or a red one↘?
1. Was it the small black dog↗ or the small brown dog that bit you↘?
2. Do you prefer the old wooden chair↗ or the more modern, plastic one↘?
3. Does Mary come from Australia↗ or England↘?
4. Is the pineapple sour↗ or sweet and juicy↘?
1. a hat: soft, felt, black
2. a pencil: lead, red, long
3. a bowl: round, large, striped, blue
4. a car: new, expensive, German
5. a bicycle: old, /broken, rusty
Part 6 – THE SERIAL (chuyện đọc từng kỳ)
Episode 13:
Diana Cotton phoned me at the hotel the next day, and said that she would come to Melbourne as soon as possible.
'Good,' I said. 'Let me know the flight number and I'll meet you at the airport.' Diana asked me to make a booking for her at the hotel, but I said, 'My wife and I would like you to stay with us.' I hoped Judy wouldn't mind too much, but I wanted to help.
Two days later, Diana arrived in Melbourne. I was not working that day, so I met her at the airport. I recognised her from Cotton's photo. She was tall and fair, and very attractive.
When we got home, Judy showed her to her room, and made a cup of tea. Diana didn't say very much, and as soon as she'd finished her tea, she said that she was going out.
'Can I drive you?' I asked, but she said that she'd hire a car. When she'd gone, I said to Judy, 'She seems a nice young woman, doesn't she? But Judy was not so sure.
'I don't like her,' Judy said. 'I don't know why… but I don't trust her.' We didn't see Diana very much during the next few days. She went out early in her small red car, and usually returned after dinner, and went straight to bed. She had no news of her father. Cotton's black leather briefcase was still under the bed where I had put it two weeks before. I didn't tell that to Diana. I don't know why. Then, late one night, the phone rang. It was the police.
'Detective Baker here. Richmond police,' the man said. 'Diana Cotton is staying with you, I believe. Is she there now?'
'Yes,' I replied. 'But she's asleep.'
'Right,' the detective went on. 'We'll be there in ten minutes. We have something to tell her.'

Dialogue 1:
MAI LINH: Sunday is always a special day for me. I usually wake up at about seven-thirty, and listen to the radio in bed for a while. I never do that during the week! Then I have breakfast and do the shopping. We plan a special meal on Sundays. My children really enjoy that, because I don't have time to cook a proper meal for them during the week. I always clean the house and do the washing when we get home. Then, about 11:30, I start preparing the lunch. In the afternoon we sometimes visit friends. In the evening I watch TV, and I usually go to bed at 11 o'clock.

• always
• usually (normally) (regularly)
• often (frequently)
• sometimes
• never
I usually go to bed at 11 o'clock. Tôi thường đi ngủ lúc 11 giờ.
We often visit relatives on the weekend. Chúng tôi hay đi thăm họ hàng vào ngày nghỉ cuối tuần.
Động từ năng diễn được đặt sau động từ 'to be'. Thí dụ:
I am always happy on the weekend. Tôi luôn luôn cảm thấy sung sướng vào kỳ nghỉ cuối tuần.
He is often tired at night. Anh ấy hay mệt mỏi vào ban đêm.
Part 4 - PRONUNCIATION (cách phát âm)
Để phân biệt các âm /u/ như trong từ 'food' [ 'fud ] và âm /ʊ/ như trong từ 'foot ' [ 'fʊt ], các bạn cần phải luyện nghe và nói. Các bạn hãy luyện hai câu sau.
Usually I use a ruler. Tôi thường dùng thước kẻ.
[ 'juʒ (u)əli∪j∪aI∪juz∪ə∪rulə ]
Could I have some fruit juice? Cho tôi xin nước trái cây nhé?
[ kʊd∪aI hæv səm frut 'ʤus ]

[ hi kʊd lʊk∪ət θə bʊk ənd It wʊd gI v him gʊd∪aIdIəz ]
Only one person never watches TV on a weekend.
Part 6 – THE SERIAL (chuyện đọc từng kỳ)
Episode 12:
I usually tell Judy my plans, but this time I decided not to. But I did tell Mandy. 'I'm going to phone Hong Kong,' I told her.
When I arrived at the hotel, Dave was waiting to see me. 'A funny thing happened last night,' he said. 'Cotton's assistant came back.'
'The man who says he's Cotton's assistant,' I corrected him. 'What did he want this time?'
'He brought this again,' said Dave, taking the small numbered-disk from his pocket. He wanted to know if I had the key to the safe.' And…' I prompted.
'Well… the key was there, so I opened the safe, and there was nothing in it. Strange, eh? You don't know anything about a package do you, Joe?'
'Not a thing,' I said innocently. I couldn't tell Dave about the briefcase under my bed, now could I? On the way home I went to the Post Office to phone Hong Kong. I didn't want anyone at the hotel to know about the call, and I didn't want Judy to know either.
I took Cotton's card from my pocket and dialled the number. I don't often make overseas phone calls, and I was quite nervous. But the voice which answered was very clear. It was Diana Cotton. I introduced myself and then I said, 'I'd like to speak to your father, please.'
'I'm afraid he's not here,' Diana Cotton replied. 'He's at the Royal Hotel in Melbourne… until next week.'
'But I work at the hotel, Miss Cotton,' I said.
'He isn't here. The university doesn't know where he is either.' Diana was surprised and upset.
'My father always tells me his plans,' she said. 'Something is wrong. He's in danger.' I agreed, so I told Diana about the briefcase, and about the small, red-faced man who was looking for it. I told her everything… except where the briefcase was.

We're taking a boat trip to the Reef on Tuesday, and on Wednesday we're going fishing. Then… let's see - oh yes, on Thursday we're hiking through a rainforest, and then we're playing golf on Friday… we've arranged all those… and we'll probably drive up to Cooktown at the weekend.
We're leaving Cairns on Sunday night. The plane arrives in Brisbane at nine o'clock. Then I'm catching a bus home. It gets in about eleven.

Part 3 - LESSON: talking about the future (nói về thời tương lai)
I am meeting a friend on Friday.
I am catching a bus to Hue on Sunday.
The plane arrives at nine o'clock. Máy bay hạ cánh lúc 9 giờ.
The train leaves Hanoi at midnight.
We will probably drive home on Sunday. Chúng ta có thể lái xe về nhà vào Chủ nhật.
Cấu trúc 'to be going to' được dùng để nói về một dự định, hoặc dự đoán cho tương lai dựa trên cơ sở có bằng chứng vững chắc ở thời điểm hiện tại. Thí dụ:
I am going to meet a friend on Monday.
We're going to leave on Sunday night.
On Monday↗, I'm meeting friends↘.
One day, when I was young↗, I went to Cairns↘.
1. Tomorrow↗, we're going fishing↘.
2. Last week↗, at the shop, I met an old friend↘.
3. This morning↗, in the office, I dropped my cup↘.
A. Have you booked your holidays this year?
B. Yes. We …………………..(spend) a week at the beach. We ………………………… (stay) in a big hotel.
A. It sounds great.
B. Yes, but our plane…………………. (leave) very early in the morning, so we………………. …….(get up) very early. We're …………… (learn) how to dive and catch fish. We……………………..(be) away for two weeks.
Part 6 – THE SERIAL (chuyện đọc từng kỳ)
Vocabulary:

Episode 11:
I took the briefcase from the safe and wrapped it in brown paper, and I took it home. 'I'm keeping it here until Cotton comes back,' I told Judy. She wasn't pleased!
'What will you do with it?' She asked me.
'I don't know,' I said. 'But right now I'm going to put it under the bed.' I couldn't keep the story from Mandy any longer, so I explained to her about the briefcase, and the key, and the red-faced man who had claimed to be Cotton's assistant. And I asked her to do something for me. I asked her to go to Cotton's laboratory at the university and find out where he was.
Next day, Mandy paid a visit to Cotton's lab, but she didn't find out anything new. 'It's odd,' she told me later. 'They think he must be in Hong Kong… but they're not sure. He didn't tell anyone he was going. There was an important meeting today, and he didn't tell them he wouldn't be there.'
'Who did you speak to?' I asked. 'I spoke to Ben Morris, Cotton's assistant,' she said.
'Ha ha! The attractive Ben Morris, eh? And what was he like?'
'Very nice,' said Mandy. She blushed, and I thought she looked very pretty! 'But he's going to let me know when he hears anything,' she went on.
'He's worried. I'm sure of that.'
'And when are you going out with him?' I wanted to know.
'I'm not!' Mandy said, but I knew she was interested! But it was Henry Cotton who interested me. I did not believe that he had written that letter. Why would he ask for 'a package' and not a briefcase? And I knew that he would not send his driver for something so important. Then how did the man get the disk from Cotton? And why didn't Ben Morris know where Cotton was?

Part 3 - LESSON: making comparisons (so sánh)
Khi muốn so sánh giữa hai hoặc nhiều đồ vật, giữa hai người hoặc giữa các sự việc, chúng ta dùng các tính từ so sánh. Với tính từ có một hoặc hai âm tiết, hình thái so sánh ở cấp hơn sẽ có thêm đuôi '-er' và ở cấp tuyệt đối sẽ có thêm đuôi '-est'. Thí dụ:
Adelaide is big. Adelaide là một thành phố lớn.
Melbourne is bigger than Adelaide. Thành phố Melbourne lớn hơn thành phố Adelaide.
Sydney is the biggest. Thành phố Sydney là thành phố lớn nhất.
Với tính từ có từ ba âm tiết trở lên, khi so sánh hơn chúng ta thêm từ 'more', và ở cấp tuyệt đối là the ' the most'. Thí dụ:
Adelaide is interesting. Thành phố Adelaide hấp dẫn.
Melbourne is more interesting. Thành phố Melbourne lại hấp dẫn hơn.
Sydney is the most interesting.
good best the best tốt tốt hơn tốt nhất
bad worse the worst xấu xấu hơn xấu nhất
It is easy to meet people in the country.
It is easier to meet people in a town.
It is easiest to meet people in the city.
AS – ADJECTIVE – AS
Brisbane is as pretty as Melbourne.
NOT AS - ADJECTIVE – AS
Brisbane is not as pretty as Melbourne. Brisbane không đẹp bằng Melbourne.
Nếu muốn nhấn mạnh sự khác biệt, chúng ta có thể cho thêm từ 'much' vào ngay trước tính từ so sánh.Thí dụ:
Brisbane is much prettier than Melbourne. Brisbane đẹp hơn Melbourne nhiều.
Và khi muốn chỉ rõ sự khác nhau một chút xíu, chúng ta có thể dùng từ 'a little' ('a bit' trong hội thoại) vào trước tính từ so sánh. Thí dụ:
Brisbane is a little prettier than Melbourne.
very interesting
a day or two
[ ə∪'deI∪j∪ɔ tu ]
Monday or Tuesday
[ 'mʌndeI∪j∪ɔ tjuzdeI ]
city or the bush
[ 'sIti∪j∪ɔ θə∪'bʊʃ ]
stay at home for a day or two
[ steI∪j∪æ hoʊm∪fə∪r∪ə deI∪j∪ɔ tu ]
very isolated
[ vɛri∪j∪_IsəleItəd ]

'G'day, Dave,' I said. 'Did anything interesting happen while I was away?'
'Not much,' Dave grunted. I wasn't surprised at Dave's reply. He's very different from me. He's younger, of course, and he's not really interested in his job. 'Oh, there was one thing,' Dave said casually. 'That man you were so friendly with… Dr Cotton. He's gone. He's not coming here any more.'
'Gone?' I asked in amazement. 'What do you mean?'
'I don't know,' said Dave. 'But he sent a man here to get his things.'
'What man? What things? Why didn't he come himself?' I demanded.
'OK, Joe,' said Dave calmly. 'One question at a time!' I took a deep breath, and then I said, 'What happened, Dave?'
'Well… it was like this,' replied Dave. 'This chap came in last week. Tuesday, I think it was. He had one of our numbered disks from the safe-room. Anh he had a letter from Cotton, on university notepaper, which said he was to collect a package from the safe.'
'A package, was it?' I asked. 'Are you sure?'
'Yeah, that's what the letter said. But I couldn't find the safe key, so he didn't get the package.'
'And where's the disc now?' I wanted to know.
'He took it with him. Number… um… I wrote it down… 862. Yes, 862. He took it away, and he was pretty angry, I can tell you.'
'And who was he, do you know?' Dave thought for a while.
'I don't remember his name,.' he said. 'He was a small man… shorter than you… and rather overweight, red-faced, reddish hair. The letter said he was Cotton's assistant.'
'Not likely,' I said. 'I'd take a bet that Cotton didn't know about this.'

Episode 9:
On the last day of my leave, I changed all the locks. Everything was back in its place, and nothing was missing, except the keys. It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny. The forecast was for a cool change, so I decided to enjoy the good weather while it lasted. I took the newspaper into the garden, planning to forget about the breakin. I thought it had something to do with the briefcase at the hotel, but there was nothing I could do.
I opened the newspaper, and there was a story about Henry Cotton. He was the leader of a team of scientists in Hong Kong and Melbourne. They were working on important medical research. I didn't understand all the details. But the scientists were about to make an important discovery.
Later, I showed the paper to Judy and Mandy. 'Look,' I said. 'Henry Cotton is a very famous man.' Judy didn't want to hear about Cotton because she blamed him for the break-in. But Mandy looked at the photo of the scientists, taken at the university.
'Who's that?' she asked. She pointed to a young man standing at the edge of the group. He was tall, and good-looking. His name was Ben Morris, and the paper said he was Cotton's special assistant. 'Cute,' said Mandy. She thought he was very attractive! So I said, 'He works at your university. It won't be hard to find him. You should get someone to introduce you.' 'No!' said Judy firmly. 'I don't want you to get involved too!'
I winked at Mandy. 'Your mother prefers a quiet life,' I said. But I thought she was probably right. We should not be involved. I would return the briefcase next day, and forget about the mystery of Henry Cotton. It should have been easy, shouldn't it ? But of course, it wasn't.

The police officers looked through the house again, but they didn't find any clues. 'There's nothing we can do, I'm afraid,' the policeman said. 'Are you sure that everything's here?'.
'I think so,' I said. 'If there is anything missing, we'll let you know.'
'Right. And if I were you, I'd get that lock fixed.' He pointed at the broken lock on the bathroom window.
The policemen left, and Judy and I got to work. I put the books back on their shelves and arranged the heavy furniture while Judy tidied the bedrooms and the kitchen. Then I decided to fix the broken lock. I had a spare lock in the garden shed so I went to the kitchen drawer to get the key. It wasn't there.
'Where's the shed key?' I asked Judy. We looked in all the drawers and we found that all our keys were missing. Judy said, 'They were all in the drawer when we went away. I'm sure they were. It's your fault, Joe. Someone wants the contents of Cotton's briefcase, and they won't give up know. I'm scared. I'm going to call the police again.'
'I'll do it,' I said quickly. I dialled the police number, and I talked to one of the policeman who had come to the house. 'Something strange has happened,' I said. 'All our keys have been stolen. Nothing else is missing.'
'Well, Mr Moon, why would anyone want your keys?' I hesitated. Should I tell him? Then I said, 'I have no idea officer, no idea at all.' Judy said, 'You should have told him about the other key. You'd better tell Mandy, anyway.' I thought about it, but I decided not to tell Mandy.
'If she knew, she'd only worry,' I said. 'In any case, she'll be safer if she doesn't know.'
