Phân biệt cách dùng MAYBE, PERHAPS và POSSIBLY

Tất cả các từ này ít nhiều đều giống nhau. Cả ba từ này đều cho thấy là một điều gì đó là có thể xảy ra, có thể thực hiện được, có thể là có thực. v.v.

Tuy nhiên sự khác nhau thực sự về nghĩa giữa các từ này là khi chúng ta dùng các từ đó và trong những ngữ cảnh được dùng.

Với từ maybe, chúng ta có thể nói đây là một từ không trịnh trọng, thường được dùng trong ngôn ngữ hàng ngày, ví dụ như trong câu: Maybe we’ll skip school today. Hoặc là trong ngữ cảnh: “Are you going to Anna’s party?” ” Hmmm… maybe.”

Sang từ “perhaps”, chúng ta có thể nói đây là một từ lịch sự hơn, không quá trịnh trọng mà cũng không quá bỗ bã. Đây là một cách trung dung để diễn tả khả năng có thể xảy ra, chẳng hạn: “There were 200, perhaps 250, people at the theatre”. Hay: “Perhaps we should start again”.

Và cuối cùng là từ “possibly”. Chúng ta có thể nói từ “possibly” trịnh trọng hơn hai từ trên, đặc biệt thường được dùng trong thỏa thuận hay bất đồng. Chẳng hạn để trả lời câu hỏi: “Do you think he will apply for the job?”, câu trả lời có thể là “Hmm. Possibly, possibly not”. Hay: “He may possibly decide to apply for the job”.

Tóm lại, nhìn chung là, mặc dù không phải trong tất cả mọi trường hợp, nhưng nhìn chung là có sự khác biệt khi dùng: “maybe” là thân mật, không trịnh trọng, còn “perhaps” là trung dung hơn, không thân mật mà cũng không trịnh trọng, và “possibly” là hơi trịnh trọng hơn một chút.

Ok, well thanks very much Ketsarin. Well, all of those words mean more or less the same thing, as I’m sure you know. They all show that something is possible, or might be true.

However, the real difference in meaning between them is when we use them and in what context. One is informal, another is neutral and another one is formal.

So ‘maybe’, we can say, is a rather informal word. For example, ‘Maybe we’ll skip school today.’ Or: ‘Are you going to Anna’s party?’ ‘Hmmm… maybe.’

Getting to the word ‘perhaps’… ‘Perhaps’ is, we could say, more neutral and polite. It’s just a neutral way of expressing possibility. For example: ‘There were 200, perhaps 250, people at the theatre’. Or: ‘Perhaps we should start again.’

Now moving on to ‘possibly’… ‘Possibly’ sounds, I think we could say, a bit more formal than either maybe or perhaps, and especially in agreement or disagreement. For example, in answer to the question ‘Do you think he will apply for the job?’ the answer:

‘Hmm. Possibly, possibly not.’ Or: ‘He may possibly decide to apply for the job.’

So, I think that we could sum it up that largely – not every time, but largely – there’s a difference in register: ‘maybe’ is quite informal, ‘perhaps’ is neutral, and ‘possibly’ would be a little bit formal. Does that answer your question?
