Half proverb

There are several proverbs, which we often use only half of. The endings are so familiar that it isn’t necessary to say them. Below are some which can prove to be extremely useful in your daily life.

People, especially native speakers, usually enjoy making use of proverbs because they are short, generally accepted and easily sum up things or situations.

Do keep in mind that for each proverb there is another which says exactly the opposite.

For example:

Too many cooks spoil the broth. BUT Many hands make light works.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. BUT Out of sight, out of mind.

Birds of a feather flock together. BUT Opposites attract.

1. Your brother’s girlfriend is going abroad for six months. He’s afraid that she will lose interest in him while she’s away. You could say: “Don’t worry. …………………………………………….. .”

2. A friend thinks that he will not get a job because the boss’s nephew is interested in the same position. You agree: “…………………………………………… .”

3. Three friends offer to help you build a new cottage. You say: “Thanks! ……………………………………………………………… .”

4. You are discussing two friends: Bob is full of grand promises and Ben who says little, but is always very willing to help. You could say: “I prefer Ben. …………………………………………….. .”

5. A friend of yours is very upset that he has broken his brand new Iphone 6S. You could say: Don’t make such a fuss. ………………………………………………… .”

6. You best friend is thinking about resigning from a not very well-paid job in order to spend time looking for something better. You think he would be better to find a new job first. You say: “……………………………………………………….. .”
