1/ beside là một giới từ, nghĩa tương tự với 'next to', 'at the side of' hoặc 'by' và thường được dùng với các động từ như 'standing', 'sitting', 'lying'

Ex:

• 'Where is the apple orchard?' 'It’s right beside the main road. You can’t miss it!'
• 'We were lying beside the pool when the phone rang. It was his boss wanting to know why he wasn’t at work.'

2/ besides là một giới từ đồng nghĩa với 'in addition to', 'as well as' hoặc 'apart from'

Ex:

• 'What exam subjects are you taking besides English and maths?'
• 'Were there any boys at the party besides Matt and Dillon?'

Ngoài ra besides cũng được dùng để giới thiệu cho một participial phrase:

'Besides bruising his face, he cut his lip and bloodied his nose.'

Besides cũng có chức năng như một trạng từ mang nghĩa ‘as well’, 'furthermore' hoặc 'anyway'

Ex:

We use ‘electrical’ to describe systems, industries, components and certain machines or devices. Consider the following:

• 'Electrical appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers use a lot of electricity.'
• 'My new car has electrically-operated windows.'
• 'My house was full of electrical and electronic (note: not ‘electronical’) equipment.'
• 'The electrical and mechanical engineering industries are doing well at the present time.'

There's heightened concern about the future state of the world's oceans. New research indicates that if seawater continues to acidify at the rate currently seen then the marine environment could lose about 30% of the diverse life forms that exist within it by the end of the century. The research was presented at a major meeting in Vancouver.

Much of the carbon dioxide put into the atmosphere through fossil fuel burning is being absorbed by the seas. It's acidifying the waters, corroding the shells and skeletons of corals, sea urchins and similar species. Scientists want to know how conditions might deteriorate in the future and have been looking at underwater volcanoes, where C02 naturally bubbles through the water.

Samsung denies the allegation and has made counter-claims that Apple had copied technology. The two companies have launched legal cases against each other around the world.
