Statistics show that the number of visas converted from tourist visas to student visas has reached over 36,000 from January 2023 to May 2024. This has compelled the Australian government to introduce new measures and policies aimed at optimising and reducing the number of immigrants. As a result, the latest migration policies changes will involve more stringent visa assessments to ensure that those coming to Australia are genuinely intending to study.

IMPORTANT CHANGES IN MIGRATION POLICIES

  •  Temporary Suspension of Tourist Visa (Visa 600) to Student Visa (Visa 500) Conversions: The Australian government will temporarily suspend accepting conversions from tourist visas to student visas. This measure aims to implement stricter screening processes to ensure that student visas are granted to international students whose primary objective is to study in Australia.
  • Temporary Graduates in Australia (Visa 485) Will Not Be Eligible to Convert to Student Visa (500): This means that Australia will temporarily stop issuing a second visa for those holding a 485 visa (post-graduation) to continue staying in Australia for further studies. The aim is to ensure that, after completing their studies, international students have clearer goals regarding staying to work and meet the necessary criteria and skills to join the Australian labour market (under a different visa category) or return to their home countries.
  • The Age Limit for Visa 485 Will Be Reduced from 50 to 35: Additionally, the English language requirements will also be increased.
  • Enhanced Scrutiny for Student Visas: Accordingly, students will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient financial capacity to cover their education and living expenses in Australia.

Also, please be well-noted that:

  • These changes will take effect from July 1, 2024.
  • Current temporary graduates can still apply for visa extensions until June 30, 2024.
  • Temporary graduates can apply for other visas to stay in Australia, such as the Skilled Independent Visa or the Family Sponsored Visa.

These changes may impact the plans of international students wishing to study and work in Australia. Hence, students need to carefully consider their visa options and post-graduation plans.

GOOD NEWS: MINIMUM WAGE INCREASED BY 3.75%

Besides changes in visa policies, the Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.75% increase in the national minimum wage and minimum wage rates with bonuses, bringing good news to international students working part-time in Australia.

Increase in National Minimum Wage:

  • From July 1, 2024, the national minimum wage will increase by 3.75%, equivalent to $915.90 per week or $24.10 per hour.

The new wage rates will apply from the first full pay period on or after July 1, 2024.

Increase in Minimum Wage with Bonuses:

  • The minimum wage with bonuses will also increase by 3.75%, applicable from the first full pay period on or after July 1, 2024.

This is particularly significant for international students working part-time in Australia, improving their income and safeguarding their labour rights.
